Mike Henry - Watercolor Value and Light Workshop (Day 2)

Join Mike Henry as he gives step-by-step instruction in basic concepts that are fundamental to capturing the beauty that surrounds us!

All supplies included, but it is recommended that students bring a watercolor sketchbook. If you prefer to work in a different medium, feel free to bring your own supplies.

Mike is a master of using light and color in his pieces. He has received numerous awards and watercolor society memberships and his work has been featured in watercolor magazines.

We are so fortunate to have Mike bring his relaxed, straight-forward instructional style and ability to coach students of all abilities to Lake City Arts!

Topics we will cover:

  • warm-up by making a 10 step value scale

  • working with the same, simple composition, paint 3 watercolor sketches: high key, middle key, low key

  • set the mood and atmosphere by keying your tonal values

  • mapping 3 tonal values from a contour sketch

  • tie similar values together to make stronger shapes

  • create depth by using adjacent and contrasting values

  • orchestrate the light and dark values to make a dynamic composition

  • front light, top light, side light, ¾ light

  • manipulating values

  • counterchange

Mike will then help each student apply these concepts to create a larger final piece.
